June 11 – Arrival in Bangkok

We arrived at Incheon International in mid afternoon with a few hours to kill before our connecting flight to Bangkok. Incheon was just rated the best airport in the world, and it was beautiful, comfortable, and efficient. This was the height of the swine flu scare, so in addition to going through customs, we were subject to a health screening by Korean health officials. We sailed through with plenty of time to scarf down some kim chee, bibimbap, noodle soup, and a couple of pricey bottles of Cass.

We departed Seoul at 8:15 in the evening on Korean Air flight 653 for a 5 hour and 30 minute, 2,281 mile flight to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport. With the time difference, we arrived at 11:25 that night. Despite our best efforts, the combination of the lost previous night, the dimmed cabin lights, and a glass or two of wine knocked us out on the flight, so we arrived at midnight at our hotel in Bangkok, the Metropolitan, wide awake and ready to go. An appointment at the embassy at 7:45 the next morning reined in any temptations to take advantage of the jet lag, so we did our best to make it an early night. The hotel staff helped by having hot tea, chocolates, fresh fruit, and champagne waiting for us in our room when we checked in.
