June 23 – Kuala Lumpur

We left Ko Samui today via its famous open air airport–said to be one of the world’s most beautiful–for flight down to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

We flew on Bangkok Airways to Phuket, which was the city we originally had our eye on for our wedding. As anticipated, Phuket was being lashed by the southwest monsoon. For part of our layover, the power in the airport was flickering on and off. From Phuket, we picked up a Malaysian Airways flight to Kuala Lumpur. Great airline…some in-flight satay, and an easy trip in a super efficient airport with an in-airport train that travels continuously back and forth between the airport and city. Once in Kuala Lumpur, we checked into the Hotel Maya, famed for its high design, 2:3 staff to guest ratio, and a hydrotherapy pool encased in a bamboo cube. Beautiful!

We spent the afternoon exploring Kuala Lumpur and eating our way through its vast food markets.

In the evening, we kicked back for a few hours in the hotel pool, then headed to the Sky Lounge for al fresco drinks next to the surprisingly beautiful Petronas Towers.
